Chondroitin Sulfate in JointBrex: Dose, Research and Safety
JointBrex has 100 mg of chondroitin sulfate in two capsules. Trials used 800 to 1,200 mg a day, so this is about 8% of the GAIT dose. A Cochrane review found a small short-term pain change in mostly low-quality trials, GAIT found no clear benefit, and the ACR guideline recommends against it. It may raise bleeding risk with warfarin.
What is chondroitin sulfate in JointBrex?
A natural part of cartilage, here at a small dose.

Chondroitin sulfate is a natural part of cartilage. It helps cartilage hold water, which gives it spring when you climb stairs or walk downhill.
In JointBrex, chondroitin sulfate is listed at 100 mg per serving of two capsules. It sits third on the panel, after glucosamine and boswellia.
The thinking is that it pairs with glucosamine. Glucosamine is a building block, and chondroitin is part of the finished cushion. This page looks at what studies found and how the 100 mg dose compares.

Does chondroitin work? What the Cochrane review found
About 6 more people in 100 improved, in low-quality trials.
It may give a small short-term pain change, but the trials were mostly low quality. The 2015 Cochrane review pooled 43 trials with 9,110 people, mostly with knee osteoarthritis (Singh et al., Cochrane 2015 (chondroitin)).
On a pain scale of 0 to 100, people on chondroitin scored about 18 at the end, and people on placebo about 28. That is a 10-point difference. Out of 100 people, 53 on chondroitin and 47 on placebo reached a 20% drop in pain.
Cochrane 2015: people with a meaningful pain drop
So about 6 more people in 100 did well on chondroitin. Joint space narrowed 0.18 mm less over two years. That is a very small change. Side effects were no more common than with placebo.
Did chondroitin beat placebo in the GAIT trial?
Chondroitin and the combination fell short of placebo.
No. GAIT gave 1,583 adults with knee osteoarthritis chondroitin 1,200 mg a day, glucosamine, both, a drug, or placebo for 24 weeks (Clegg et al., 2006 (GAIT, NEJM)).
Chondroitin added 5.3 points over placebo, and the combination added 6.5. Neither was a real difference. The pain drug celecoxib added 10 points and was the only option that clearly beat placebo.
One group with moderate-to-severe pain did better on the combination, 79.2% versus 54.3%. The authors called this exploratory, so it is a lead for future trials, not a result to rely on.
GAIT results at 24 weeks
| GAIT group | Daily dose | Points over placebo | Real difference? |
|---|---|---|---|
| Chondroitin | 1,200 mg | +5.3 | No |
| Glucosamine | 1,500 mg | +3.9 | No |
| Both together | 1,500 mg + 1,200 mg | +6.5 | No |
| Celecoxib | 200 mg | +10.0 | Yes |

What do guidelines say about chondroitin?
ACR says no. NCCIH says uncertain.
The main U.S. guideline advises against it. The 2019 American College of Rheumatology guideline recommends against chondroitin for knee and hip osteoarthritis (ACR/Arthritis Foundation guideline, 2019). The 2026 update strongly recommends against glucosamine, chondroitin and their combinations for knee, hip and hand (ACR OA guideline update summary, 2026).
A pooled analysis of large trials found chondroitin lowered pain by 0.3 cm on a 10 cm scale (Wandel et al., BMJ 2010). People start to notice a change at about 0.9 cm. NCCIH says it is still uncertain whether chondroitin helps knee symptoms (NCCIH, Glucosamine and Chondroitin, 2023).
Against chondroitin for knee and hip osteoarthritis. Strongly for exercise, and for weight loss when weight is a factor.
Strongly against glucosamine, chondroitin and their combinations for knee, hip and hand osteoarthritis.
Still uncertain for knee symptoms. Any effect on joint structure is uncertain.
0.3 cm less pain than placebo on a 10 cm line, short of the 0.9 cm patients notice.
Exercise has the strongest support. Our post on daily moves for stiff joints has easy places to start.
Is 100 mg of chondroitin in JointBrex enough?
100 mg is about one twelfth of the GAIT dose.
It is far below the doses studied. Trials pooled by Wandel used at least 800 mg a day and left out lower doses as too small (Wandel et al., BMJ 2010). GAIT used 1,200 mg. Usual intake is 200 to 400 mg three times a day (LiverTox, Glucosamine, 2018).
Chondroitin per day, scaled to the GAIT dose
To put it another way, you would need 16 capsules to reach 800 mg. Please don't do that. The label says not to exceed two capsules a day, and the other ingredients would rise too. In JointBrex, chondroitin is a small add-in, not the main event.
Why do JointBrex and other formulas pair chondroitin with glucosamine?
A common pair with little proof of extra benefit.
Because the two are both parts of cartilage, and many people buy them as a pair. The idea is that they work better together. Studies have not shown that clearly.
Glucosamine plus chondroitin
| Study | Combination result |
|---|---|
| Clegg et al., 2006 (GAIT, NEJM) | +6.5 points over placebo; not a real difference |
| Wandel et al., BMJ 2010 | 0.5 cm less pain on a 10 cm line; below the 0.9 cm people notice |
| ACR OA guideline update summary, 2026 | Strongly against combinations for knee, hip and hand |
In JointBrex, the pair gives 1,000 mg of glucosamine and 100 mg of chondroitin. Read the glucosamine sulfate page for the main ingredient.
Can chondroitin in JointBrex rebuild cartilage?
Joint-space changes were tiny or absent.
No study shows that it can. The brand's sales page talks about rebuilding cartilage, but the research does not back that up.
In the Cochrane review, joint space narrowed 0.18 mm less over two years with chondroitin (Singh et al., Cochrane 2015 (chondroitin)). That is less than the thickness of two sheets of paper. The 2-year U.S. follow-up of GAIT found no difference from placebo in joint space for any group (NCCIH, Glucosamine and Chondroitin, 2023). And those studies used 800 mg or more a day, not 100 mg.
So we describe chondroitin as a small add-in that some people like to take with glucosamine. We do not describe it as a way to repair joints.

Does chondroitin raise bleeding risk?
A known caution with warfarin.
It can when taken with warfarin. NCCIH says both glucosamine and chondroitin have been linked to higher bleeding risk with warfarin (NCCIH, Glucosamine and Chondroitin, 2023). MSK notes the pair may make warfarin act more strongly and raise INR (MSK About Herbs, Glucosamine, 2026).
JointBrex also has turmeric, bromelain, quercetin and boswellia, which raise similar questions. So if you take warfarin, another blood thinner or daily aspirin, check with your prescriber first. Our post on joint supplements and blood thinners explains what to ask.
Who should check before taking chondroitin in JointBrex?
Four groups to talk to a doctor first.
Most adults tolerate chondroitin well. In the Cochrane review, side effects were no more common than placebo. A few groups should check first.
- 1
Blood thinners
Ask your prescriber and plan an INR check.
- 2
Pregnancy and nursing
Little is known, and the label says not to use it.
- 3
Under 18
The label is for adults only.
- 4
Shellfish allergy
Not from the chondroitin, but the JointBrex glucosamine comes from crayfish.
See all cautions on the JointBrex side effects page, or the full ingredient list.
Chondroitin sulfate questions
Does chondroitin work for knee pain?
The effect is small and the evidence is weak. A Cochrane review found pain about 10 points lower on a 100-point scale in mostly low-quality trials (Singh et al., Cochrane 2015 (chondroitin)). In the large GAIT trial, chondroitin did not beat placebo.
How much chondroitin should I take a day?
Trials usually used 800 to 1,200 mg a day (Wandel et al., BMJ 2010). JointBrex gives 100 mg in two capsules. Follow your label, and ask your doctor before you add another chondroitin product.
How much chondroitin is in JointBrex?
There is 100 mg of chondroitin sulfate per serving of two capsules. That is about 8% of the 1,200 mg used in GAIT.
Is chondroitin a blood thinner?
It is not a blood thinner, but it has been linked to higher bleeding risk when taken with warfarin (NCCIH, Glucosamine and Chondroitin, 2023). If you take any blood thinner, ask your prescriber first.
What are the side effects of chondroitin?
Side effects are usually mild, such as an upset stomach. In the Cochrane review, side effects were no more common than with placebo (Singh et al., Cochrane 2015 (chondroitin)).
Does chondroitin rebuild cartilage?
No study shows that. Cochrane found joint space narrowed 0.18 mm less over two years, a very small change. The 2-year U.S. study found no difference from placebo (NCCIH, Glucosamine and Chondroitin, 2023).
Is it better to take glucosamine and chondroitin together?
Not clearly. In GAIT, the combination did not beat placebo overall (Clegg et al., 2006 (GAIT, NEJM)). One small subgroup with more pain did better, but that result was exploratory.
Where does chondroitin come from?
Chondroitin is a natural part of cartilage, and supplements are usually taken from animal cartilage. The JointBrex label does not say which animal its chondroitin comes from.
Is chondroitin safe during pregnancy?
Little is known about it (NCCIH, Glucosamine and Chondroitin, 2023). The JointBrex label says it is not for pregnant or nursing women or anyone under 18.
Is chondroitin safe for kidneys?
No kidney problem stands out in the sources we reviewed, and large trials found side effects no more common than placebo. If you have kidney disease, ask your doctor before starting any supplement.
